The Internet will be the source for both people who only need an occasional number and those who want custom tabulations. Much of the information on the Internet will be available free. But a fee will be charged for custom tabulations. The American Factfinder, New for Census 2000 Look for the American FactFinder on the Census Bureau's Internet web site. The FactFinder gives you instant access to publications and summary data. It helps you create your own extracts and custom tabulations online. Use the FactFinder to summarize information for geographic areas and generate maps online. Use the fact finder to obtain Census 2000 data, as they become available, as well as 1990 census information and information from other Census Bureau programs. Census 2000 Information in Print A series of reports-one per state-will provide population and housing characteristics at the state level, as well as population and housing unit counts for cities, counties, and American Indian and Alaska Native areas. There also will be a report covering the entire U.S. And on CD-ROM Detailed information is available on CD-ROMS. One series will summarize the information collected from every person and household in the United States-age, race, and family composition. The information collected from a sample of households, such as income, education and occupation, will also be available. In some cases, information will be provided for areas as small as city blocks. Census 2000 will collect information on: * Number of persons * Families and households * Age and gender * Race, Hispanic origin and ancestry * Language spoken at home * Income and poverty * Education and school enrollment * Employment * Citizenship * Vehicles available and commuting to work * Disability * Homeownership status * Vacancy * Rent and value of housing * Housing costs and mortgage status * Age and type of structure * Plumbing and kitchen facilities * House heating fuel Census 2000 data will be available for many geographic areas including: * States, all 50 as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. * Counties * Cities, towns, and townships * Census tracts, small neighborhood-size areas * Block groups, groups of census blocks, generally containing 800 to 1,000 people. You can combine these to create your own special purpose areas. * Blocks, all 9 million of them, covering the entire U.S. Not all data are summarized at this small level of geography. * Congressional Districts * American Indian and Alaska Native Areas Answering the census is important, easy and safe. Each individual's answers are combined with others to produce the statistical summaries that are published. No one will be able to connect the answers with an individual's name or address. All information on individuals is held strictly confidential. By law, the Census Bureau cannot share the individual answers it receives with others, including welfare agencies, the Immigration and Naturalization Service, the Internal Revenue Service, courts, police and the military. Anyone who breaks this law can receive up to five years in prison and $5,000 in fines. The law works-millions of questionnaires were processed during the 1990s without any breach of trust.
