Fact of the Day

Half of Unmarried Mothers With Recent Births In Poverty

For 2000-2003, 29 percent of U.S. women with a birth in the last year were unmarried. Most states in the South had a higher percentage of mothers with a birth in the last year who were unmarried compared with the national average. Half of all unmarried mothers with a birth in the last year were below the poverty level. A higher percentage of married mothers with a birth in the last year who live in the West and South were below the poverty level compared with the national average. The findings come from a recent Census Bureau report, Indicators of Marriage and Fertility in the United States from the American Community Survey: 2000 to 2003.

Hot Tip

Residential Finance Survey Focuses on Properties, Not Housing Units

The Census Bureau has conducted the Residential Finance Survey (RFS) every 10 years since 1951 and yet many analysts are unaware of it. For a sample of properties (68,000 addresses in 2001), the Census Bureau collects data on housing financial arrangements from three sources - homeowners, owners of rental properties, and lenders. In 2001, for example, there were 83.5 million properties. Almost 50.6 million were mortgaged. Almost 37.6 million had a fixed-rate, level payment mortgage; 2.3 million had a short-term mortgage with a balloon payment; 11,000 had a reverse mortgage; and 6.5 million had an adjustable rate mortgage (ARM).

The RFS has data on owner characteristics, property characteristics, and financing characteristics. The last includes interest rate, type of mortgage, term of mortgage, holder of mortgage, caps on interest rate over life of the ARM, monthly payment, items included in first mortgage, etc. The results of the RFS are available online in a PDF report or in microdata files available for download. On the Census Bureau homepage, click on "Housing" and then on "Residential Finance Survey."

Fact of the Day

Time Series Data for Cities

"What is the population of Edmond, Oklahoma? And what is its population history?" This is a question we received recently from a customer wanting to find this information online; it's the kind of question people ask us often. The first part is easy. Just come to the Census Bureau's home page and use the trusty Population Finder tool (left side). In 2004, Edmond had a population of 73,080 - a jump of over 20,000 from the 1990 population, which is also shown on this page, along with links to other data on the city.

For the "population history," the population in past years, the search is a little more difficult. For larger cities (100,000 or more) the task is a little easier, but we can still find data online back to 1970 for places like Edmond. Go to our "Questions" box on the home page and type in "historical." FAQ 40 and 733 have links to a history page where you can find data for even small places. On the history page scroll down to item 39 - the 1990 Population and Housing Unit Counts (CPH-2) - and look for table 45, which has the 1970, 1980, and 1990 population for places. Edmond (1970 pop: 16,633) is there along with thousands of others. For earlier data, contact our Population Statistics Office at (301) 763-2422.

Hot Tip

Rotate the Map!

The Census Bureau releases virtually all of its maps online in PDF. Many of the maps are shown in easy-to-read portrait mode; some are in landscape mode and thus harder to read online. Remember Adobe has a rotation tool in the menu bar allowing you to rotate documents clockwise or counter-clockwise. To find our maps, go to the Census Bureau home page and click on "Maps" next to "Geography." Good news if you have access to a plotter: all our wall-size maps are designed to be printed on a plotter at full size. You can still print them in page-size form but legibility suffers.
