Fact of the Day

Homeownership Over 70 Percent in 33 States

The national homeownership rate was 68.3 in 2003; 33 states had a homeownership rate over 70 percent. Low ownership rates are found in several populous states: New York (54.3 percent), California (58.9), and Texas (64.5). The Census Bureau releases annual ownership rates for states and large metropolitan areas, with some data on the housing structure and the household characteristics. Quarterly figures are released for the nation as a whole and the four regions.

2002 Economic Census -- Industry Series. All 651 industry and industry group reports are now available online in PDF presenting national-level data on number of establishments, revenue,
annual payroll, and number of paid employees. Includes data by product lines and, for largest

the Customer Services Center. Eventually available on DVD.

2002 County Business Patterns. CD-ROM (C1-E02-CBPX-01-US1; $50) containing county economic data by industry. Includes number of business establishments, number of employees, payroll, and employment-size class for every county in the nation. Online tabulations and reports are already available free on the Internet. Also available now as print-on-demand reports through the Customer Services Center.

Advance Report on Characteristics of Employer Business Owners: 2002. Report based on 2002 Survey of Business Owners and Self-Employed Persons (SBO).


Construction

Building Permits: January 2005. Detailed information on new privately owned housing units authorized. Monthly and annual data for states, counties, metro areas, and places available online. Data also for sale on diskette through the Census Bureau's Manufacturing and Construction Division, Building Permits Branch, 301-763-5160. Call for pricing information. Note: Beginning with the January 2005 data, building permit data reflects an increase in the universe of permit-issuing places from 19,000 to 20,000 places. New monthly samples for the residential construction surveys based on the new permit universe are introduced. These changes will have no effect on the total level of housing starts and completions because the increase in the permit universe is offset by a decrease in the universe of areas where permits are not required. Building permit data for 2004 will be shown for both universes.

Fact of the Day

7.7 Million Owners of Employer Firms

Recent statistics from the 2002 Survey of Business Owners, part of the Economic Census, show the U.S. had 7.7 million owners of employer firms (firms with payroll as opposed to nonemployer firms where there are no paid employees). Over 70 percent of the owners were men; 27 percent, women (3 percent did not specify their sex). Almost a third of the owners were between 45 and 54 years old. Almost half reported spending over 40 hours a week involved in their business.

These numbers are preliminary and may be superseded by later releases. To find the data, come to the Census Bureau home page and click on "Economic Census" and then on the links under "Advance Report on Characteristics of Employer Business Owners."
