School Work Experience Programs (SWEP)

A School Work Experience Program (SWEP) is a school-operated program designed to assist youths with disabilities find and maintain meaningful employment. The youths are placed by the school in community-based employment—worksites outside of the school setting. Whether an employment relationship exists between the youths with disabilities and the school and/or the separate worksite depends on several factors.

When an employment relationship exists, the community-based employer may pay students with disabilities special minimum wages if the school has obtained an authorizing certificate from the U.S. Department of Labor Wage and Hour Division.
