U.S. Labor Department Announces Compliance Assistance Seminar for Construction Industry in Greater Northern Ohio Area

AKRON, Ohio -- The Wage and Hour Division of the U.S. Department of Labor will provide compliance assistance to construction industry employers on topics including the new overtime pay regulations, restrictions for employing youth in construction and others, at a compliance assistance seminar scheduled for Sept. 21 at the Associated Builders and Contractors Northern Ohio Chapter (ABC-NOC) offices, 9255 Market Place West, Broadview Heights, Ohio beginning at 7:30 a.m.

The event, sponsored by the ABC-NOC, will include a seminar on employing youth in construction running from 8:00 a.m. until noon and an afternoon session at 1:00 p.m. about the federal minimum wage, recordkeeping and overtime pay requirements of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). From 2:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m., the Wage and Hour Division will present information on complying with the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA).

In May 2002, Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao launched YouthRules!, a public awareness campaign to educate young workers, parents and employers about the jobs that young people can perform and hours they can work. Information about the campaign and the youth employment provisions are available on the Internet at www.youthrules.dol.gov .

Reservations for the seminar may be made by calling ABC-NOC at 440-717-0389 no later than Sept. 15. The Labor Department has agreed to present the seminar in order to provide compliance assistance to construction employers in an effort to reduce the number of youth injuries and fatalities in construction, and to ensure proper payment of wages under the FLSA and access to medical leave of absence under FMLA.
