CUB FOODS STORES IN MIAMISBURG AND BELLBROOK FINED $31,050 FOR CHILD LABOR VIOLATIONS

Chicago — Lofino's Food Stores, Inc., doing business as Cub Foods in Miamisburg and Bellbrook, Ohio, has been assessed a civil money penalty of $31,050 for alleged child labor violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

The Department's Wage and Hour Division alleged that 69 minors age 14 and 15 were working at the two stores in violation of child labor laws including working more hours allowed in one day and one week, and working later than federal law allows. The Labor Department noted that the employer immediately instituted changes to become compliant with the law and has paid the penalty. Lofino's is a franchise operator of Cub Foods stores in the area.

Federal child labor laws allow minors under 16 years of age to work outside of school but restrict the hours and times they may work. They may work no later than 7:00 p.m. (9:00 p.m. June 1 through Labor Day). They may work no more than three hours on school days and eight hours on non-school days and no more than 18 hours during school weeks and 40 hours during non-school weeks.

Secretary of Labor Alexis M. Herman launched the department's "Safe Work/Safe Kids" initiative this summer to help ensure teens have safe and positive work experiences. The initiative embraces a strategy of enhanced enforcement, increased education, strong partnerships, and heightened public awareness to increase compliance with federal child labor laws.

The Cubs Foods investigation was conducted by the Wage and Hour Division Cincinnati District Office under the supervision of District Director Richard Malloy
