U.S. LABOR DEPARTMENT FILES COMPLAINT AGAINST CLEVELAND AREA RETAIL FIRMS ALLEGING FEDERAL PAY LAW VIOLATIONS

Asks For Administrative Decision on Fine

Chicago — The U.S. Department of Labor has filed a complaint against three Cleveland area firms and their corporate president, Abrahim J. Hamid, Bay Village, Ohio, alleging violations of the minimum wage, overtime pay and record keeping requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act, which is the federal wage and hour law.

Hamid is president of Telair Communications Corporation, Pin Page Corporation and Fast Link Corporation located in Cleveland, Parma Heights and Strongsville, Ohio. The businesses sell wireless phone and pager equipment and service.

The Department alleged in a complaint filed in Federal District Court that since September 1996, the firms have failed to pay employees time and one-half pay for hours over 40 in a single work week, failed to pay the federal minimum wage of $5.15, and failed to keep adequate and accurate records of employees' wages and hours worked.

The Department asked the court to enjoin the firm from violating the Fair Labor Standards Act, and for payment of back wages as found by the court to be due to employees.

The case was filed following an investigation by the Labor Department's Wage and Hour Division District Office, 1240 E. Ninth St., Cleveland, under the supervision of District Director Barry J. Haber.
