COMMUNITY ELECTRIC INC., RENVILLE, MINN., PAYS $15,302 IN BACK WAGES FOR ALLEGED OVERTIME VIOLATIONS

Chicago —Community Electric Inc., 222 N.W. Main St., Renville, Minn., has paid $15,302 in back wages to nine employees for alleged overtime violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), the federal wage and hour law.

Following an investigation by its Wage and Hour Division, the U.S. Department of Labor alleged that Community Electric had failed to pay employees one and one-half the regular rate of pay for hours worked over 40 in a work week, as required under the FLSA.

"The employer had paid overtime after 48 hours per week as required by the State of Minnesota but did not realize he was covered under the federal overtime laws," said Denise Scharlemann, Wage and Hour district director, Minneapolis.

The FLSA covers employees who: work for enterprises that have an annual gross volume of sales made or business done of over $500,000; are engaged in interstate commerce or in the production of goods for interstate commerce, regardless of the employer’s annual volume of business; work for public agencies; or who work for hospitals, residential care facilities, schools and institutions of higher education.

The investigation covers the period from November 1994 through November 1996 and was conducted by the Wage and Hour District Office, 220 S. Second St., Room 106, Minneapolis, under the supervision of Scharlemann.
