FLEET SUPPLY, CAMBRIDGE, MINN., ASSESSED $11,825 IN PENALTIES FOR ALLEGED CHILD LABOR VIOLATIONS

Chicago —Fleet Supply Cambridge, Inc., doing business as Fleet Supply, East Highway 95, Cambridge, Minn., has been assessed $11,825 in civil money penalties for alleged child labor violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), the U.S. Department of Labor announced today.

The department's Wage and Hour Division alleged that a total of 18 minors worked in violation of the child labor regulations. One 15-year- old and seven 16- and 17-year-olds allegedly operated a fork-lift to load and unload trucks, move pallets and stock shelves. Three 16- and 17-year-olds allegedly operated a chain saw to cut trees and cut up pallets.

In addition, one minor allegedly worked past 7:00 p.m. and more than three hours on a school day. The firm also failed to record the date of birth for 13 of the minors, a violation of recordkeeping requirements.

Wage and Hour District Director Denise Scharlemann, Minneapolis, said, "This case exemplifies the department's efforts to ensure the safety and health of minors while they are gaining valuable work experience."

The child labor regulations of the FLSA prohibit certain occupations or jobs from all persons under 18 due to the hazards inherent in the work. The regulations also restrict the hours which children under 16 may work and sets further standards on the jobs they may hold.

The firm has 15 working days to file an exception letter with the department, explaining why the alleged violations did not occur. The matter then is referred to the Chief Administrative Law Judge in Washington, D.C., for a hearing.

An investigation covering the period March 1994 through March 1996 was conducted by the Wage and Hour Division, 220 S. Second St., Room 102, Minneapolis, under the supervision of Scharlemann.
