PLYMOUTH SUBWAY ASSESSED $9,675 IN PENALTIES FOR ALLEGED CHILD LABOR VIOLATIONS
Chicago Erickson Investment Group Inc., doing business as Subway, 1400 County Road 101, Plymouth, Minn., has been assessed $9,675 in civil money penalties for alleged child labor violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), the U.S. Department of Labor announced today.
Following an investigation, the department's Wage and Hour Division alleged that ten minors, ages 14 and 15, worked in violation of the hours and times standards, working as late as 1:30 a.m., as many as seven and a half hours on a school day and as many as 43 hours in a nonschool week. In addition, three of the minors allegedly were employed baking bread, a violation of the employment standards for children under 16 years of age.
The child labor regulations of the FLSA restrict the hours persons under 16 years of age may work. They may not work past 7:00 p.m. (9:00 p.m. June 1 through Labor Day). They may not work more than three hours on school days and eight hours on nonschool days nor more than 18 hours in school weeks and 40 hours in nonschool weeks.
The regulations also restrict the occupations or jobs which 14- and 15-year-olds may perform and prohibit all minors under 18 from certain jobs due to the hazards inherent in the work.
The investigation, covering the period May 1994 through May 1996, was conducted by the Wage and Hour District Office, 220 S. Second St., Room 106, Minneapolis, under the supervision of Denise Scharlemann, district director.
