YAYA'S FLAME BROILED CHICKEN ASSESSED $15,875 PENALTY FOR ALLEGED CHILD LABOR VIOLATIONS

Chicago — Bass, Inc., doing business as YaYa's Flame Broiled Chicken in Midland and Saginaw, Mich., has been assessed $15,875 in civil money penalties for alleged child labor violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

Following an investigation, the U.S. Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division alleged that a total of nine minors worked in occupations prohibited to persons under 18 years of age due to the hazards inherent in the work. The minors allegedly operated power-driven chicken "splitters" to split whole chickens, power- driven "shredders" to cut chicken and a power-driven mixer. Recordkeeping violations were also found.

Bass, Inc., operates YaYa's Flame Broiled Chicken restaurants at 1409 S. Saginaw Road, Midland, and 5055 State St., Saginaw. The department investigated both locations for the period March 1994 through March 1996.

The firm has filed an exception letter with the department explaining why the alleged violations did not occur. The matter will be referred to the Chief Administrative Law Judge in Washington, D.C., for a formal hearing.

The investigation was conducted by the Wage and Hour District Office, 2920 Fuller, N.E., Suite 100, Grand Rapids, under the supervision of Daniel H. Ocharzak, district director.
