Questions & Answers

Q. Is there a specific format for naming the photo images?  If so, how should they be named?

A:  Yes.  Descriptive file names should be given for each image file submitted.  Please name the image with descriptive text and indicate the name of the FTA Region and the name of the transit agency.  Also, limit the file name to no more than 30 characters.  Example: TRO9_BART_Bus.jpg

Q: Is there a specific format for describing the image?  Is there a limit to the number of characters provided?

A: Yes.  Please do not include textual descriptions on the image itself.  We ask that each photo submitted include the name of the transit agency and a description of what it represents.  We will place these beneath the photo on an FTA web page as a caption to showcase individual transit projects across the nation.  Captioning each photo will be helpful to site visitors, promote transit projects and is also a Federal requirement for FTA to comply with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act – Accessibility & Usability.  Please limit descriptions to no more than 150 characters.  If multiple pictures are submitted, descriptions should be provided for each and should correspond to the file name given. (Please use the following Excel file if submitting more then one file.)

Q: What format is required?

A: Electronic, high resolution pictures must be at least 300px by 300px (5 x 7 inches)   in size.  The physical file size will vary depending on the quality of the image, but typically the larger the image the better the quality. They can be provided in .tiff, .gif, .jpg, .bmp, or .png file formats.  We are not able to accept any other file formats.

Q: Can you give us examples of what types of photos are desired and acceptable?

A: Yes.  High quality pictures of various modes of transit will be accepted and are understandably preferred to include people using the transit service.  All forms of mass transit are welcome including buses, cable cars, ferries, light rail, subways, trolleys; photos of operating transit projects in revenue service; modes and facilities.

Q: What types of photos are unacceptable?

A: Thumbnails (small, low resolution images), pictures that show no relation to transit.

Q:   Do transit agencies retain any rights or control over photos sent to FTA?

A:   No.  Each photo FTA places on its website will identify the transit agency that submitted it with the intention of promoting transit and showcasing the individual agency.  Public use of photos will be neither encouraged nor discouraged by FTA.  FTA does not restrict or hinder the public from downloading any information from its website.
