Dr. Winfred Hamilton

2008 Regional Children’s Health Champion

Dr. Winfred Hamilton was honored at a national ceremony for her lifetime achievements and personal commitment to advancing children’s environmental health issues in Harris County, Texas.

Dr. Hamilton’s achievements include focusing on how children’s health can be impacted from exposure to adverse environmental factors. Some of her recent work has centered on geospatial studies on childhood lead poisoning in Galveston, which generated national media attention and led to the creation of a highly effective community task force. The study also triggered efforts elsewhere to address pockets of lead poisoning. Dr. Hamilton is currently heading an effort to require all daycare centers to be certified as lead-safe.

Her work with the medical research community has reached thousands of healthcare professionals and students, and has fostered numerous community-based efforts to make Houston greener and healthier.

The Children's Environmental Health Champion is an honorary award presented to individuals to recognize their outstanding efforts and commitment to advancing children’s environmental health issues. This year, Region 6 is pleased to recognize Dr. Hamilton as our 2008 Champion.
