Research Project: APPLICATION OF BIOINFORMATICS TO IDENTIFICATION OF PLANT GENE FUNCTION

Location: Soybean Genomics and Improvement

2005 Annual Report

4d.Progress report.
This report serves to document research conducted under a Specific Cooperative Agreement between ARS and George Mason University. Additional details of research can be found in the report for the parent project no: 1275-21220-214-00D, Project title: GENOMICS AND PROTEOMICS APPROACHES TO BROADENING RESISTANCE OF SOYBEAN TO PESTS AND PATHOGENS. We developed the Soybean Genome and Microarray Database to house gene sequence and gene expression information obtained from our DNA sequencing and gene expression project, which is targeted to broaden resistance of soybean to the soybean cyst nematode. The database will provide organized, rapid access to genomic data relating to soybean and the soybean cyst nematode, which is the most devastating pest of soybean, causings an estimated loss annually of $750 million in the U.S. Our research provides an on-line database and query system to search gene expression data concerning soybean roots susceptible to the soybean cyst nematode. Gene expression was examined in roots over the first eight days of nematode infection to identify genes that may be useful in broadening resistance to the soybean cyst nematodeNo third-party software is required to mine the microarray gene expression data, but has on-line analytical processing (OLAP) capabilities. This work is not complete, but promises to give us new insights into the interaction of plants with pests. This on-line database resource will aid scientists in identifying soybean genes involved in susceptibility and resistance to the soybean cyst nematode, so soybean can be engineered with broader resistance to the soybean cyst nematode.
