Research Project:
CLONING OF DISEASE RESISTANCE GENES FROM SUGAR BEET TAPROOTS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF TAPROOT-SPECIFIC PROMOTERS
Location: Molecular Plant Pathology
2006 Annual Report
4d.Progress report.
This report serves to document research conducted under a Trust Fund reimbursable agreement between ARS and The Beet Sugar Development Foundation. Additional details of research can be found in the report for the parent project 1275-21220-183-00D Molecular Genetic Approach for Improved Pathogen and Pest Resistance in Sugar Beet. Investigational studies include the identification and characterization of disease resistance genes that can be manipulated for more effective control of major pests and pathogens of sugar beet. These studies were first to identify genes associated with sugarbeet root defense response mechanisms incited by a sugarbeet pest. Global access is being provided for nearly 500 defense-related genes (GenBank accessions) for deciphering molecular aspects of root defense mechanisms. In addition, these genes are serving as a rich source of currently lacking root-specific promoters for targeting the production of beneficial gene products to the root.
