Research Project: SOIL MOISTURE RETRIEVAL USING ALOS PALSAR

Location: Hydrology and Remote Sensing Laboratory

2005 Annual Report

4d.Progress report.
This report serves to document research conducted under a non-funded cooperative agreement between the ARS Hydrology and Remote Sensing Laboratory and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). Additional details of research can be found in the report for the parent project 1265-13610-026-00D entitled, "INTEGRATING REMOTE SENSING, CLIMATE AND HYDROLOGY FOR EVALUATING WATER, ENERGY AND CARBON CYCLES." Plans for future data collection activities concurrent with observations by the instruments on the JAXA Advanced Land Observing System (ALOS) were developed. This satellite is scheduled for launch in 2006 and will include a new low frequency multiple polarization radar instrument capable of soil moisture measurement. Further activities are dependent upon the launch schedule. This project will provide a significant step in demonstrating the feasibility of a using radar remote sensing for higher spatial resolution products of potential value in on farm applications.
