Research Project: CONTAMINANT REMOVAL BY EDGE-OF-FIELD WETLANDS

Location: Water Quality and Ecology Research

2005 Annual Report

4d.Progress report.
Additional details of this research can be found in the report of the parent project 6408-13000-015-00D, Environmentally Sound Stream Corridor Rehabilitation and Management in Agricultural Watersheds. This report serves to document research to be conducted under a Specific Cooperative Agreement between the USDA Agricultural Research Service, National Sedimentation Laboratory and Arkansas State University (ASU). Improvement of water quality and water resources associated with our nation’s agricultural streams is both a public and a citizen-related goal. This year was the first year of a new cooperative agreement. Goals for the year included manuscript preparation for completed research which was mainly accomplished under a prior agreement and construction of a constructed wetland and vegetated ditch research site at the Farm Complex on the Arkansas State University campus. Both ARS and ASU personnel contributed to manuscript preparation and project design. Manuscripts documented the important role that constructed wetlands and vegetated ditches can play in trapping, processing, and degrading agricultural insecticides. Specific plans are progressing to continue studies in vegetation management and edge-of-field conservation practices for improved water quality. Projected research findings will significantly assist action agencies such as NRCS with validation of management practice efficiencies so that new low-cost practices can be implemented.
