Research Project:
DETERMINING EVAPOTRANSPIRATION OF CROPS ON SALINE SOIL IN THE PRESENCE OF SHALLOW SALINE GROUNDWATER
Location: Water Management Research
2006 Annual Report
4d.Progress report.
This report serves to document research conducted under a reimbursable agreement between ARS and the Bureau of Reclamation. Additional details of research can be found in the report for the parent project 5302-13000-009-00D "Irrigation and Drainage Water Management to Sustain Productivity and Protect Water Quality". Three Bowen Ratio systems were purchased to characterize crop water use using an energy balance calculation since other methods were not available for use in areas with shallow ground water. One system was installed at the West Side Research and Extension Center on a grass field, the second system was installed at Red Rock Ranch in a field of Jose Tall Wheat Grass that is being irrigated with saline water. The third unit was installed on a garlic crop at Red Rock Ranch and then used to determine water use from peppers and garlic being grown on the West Side Research and Extension Center. These are very robust systems. Data from the garlic crop showed peak crop use of garlic in excess of 9 mm per day. The evapotranspiration (Et) data for the crops will be used with CIMIS Et reference data to calculate crop coefficients for the garlic and Jose Tall Wheat grass. Data from all systems are being analyzed and summarized.
