Research Project: SEDIMENT TRANSPORT RATES AND SOURCES IN REFERENCE AND IMPACTED WATERSHEDS FOR DEVELOPING CLEAN-SEDIMENT TMDLS

Location: Watershed Physical Processes Research Unit

2004 Annual Report

4.What were the most significant accomplishments this past year?
D. This report serves to document research conducted under a Specific Cooperative Agreement between ARS and the Department of Geological Engineering, University of Mississippi. Additional details can be found in the report for the parent project 6408-13000-012-00D, Integrated Analysis of Landscape Processes for Management of Agricultural Watersheds. A methodology developed in previous years of the project was used to determine average sediment-transport rates for 84 ecoregions of the continental United States. "Bankfull" flow and sediment-transport rates can be estimated from results provided from this project, which is important in stream restoration activities where "bankfull" channel dimensions rely on estimating the discharge and sediment load at that flow level. Suspended sediment and peak-flow data from about 2,900 gauging stations across the United States were analyzed in the context of determining the discharge range that is responsible for transporting the most sediment over the long term. Results of this research provide a means for stakeholders of estimating average sediment loads in their region and for comparing loads emanating from stable and unstable watersheds.
