Objective:
1. Develop and improve comprehensive mathematical computational models for a better understanding of total and fractional sediment transport and bed changes in natural systems and during rapidly varying unsteady flows associated with dam and levee break/breaching events.
2. Provide training, technical support and maintenance of USDA models that include relevant NCCHE and USDA modules in hydrology, hydraulics, soil erosion, sedimentation, and water quality.
Approach:
Refine NCCHE¿s computational models to have the capabilities of simulating rapidly, varying unsteady free surface flows and sediment transport processes needed for studying the Dam/Levee break/breaching and sedimentation problems of streams and reservoirs.
Develop a Decision Support System (DSS) that predicts the impact of sediment redistribution and geomorphic evolution of streams following breaching of flood control structures.
Integrate the NCCHE¿s models such as CCHE1D, CCHE2D and CCHE3D and the USDA¿s models such as RUSLE2, ANAGNPS, CONCEPTS and SITES 2000, into a comprehensive modeling package. This package is used in conjunction with the DSS for selecting optimal design of control structures as well as for managing a dam/levee breaching event.
NCCHE¿s staff will provide leadership in maintaining and enhancing the modeling package including all NCCHE and USDA models. In addition, NCCHE¿s staff will provide leadership in conducting training courses, symposia and/or conferences to train Federal and State agency personnel and consultants to utilize the newly developed simulation decision support models.
