Teachers and other educators are encouraged to register now for the U.S. Department of Education's fourth annual summer workshops, where teachers share successful strategies to raise student achievement. Registration and information on the 18 free workshops being held around the country are available at www.ed.gov/teacherinitiative.
"One of my favorite parts of my job is the opportunity to travel to schools across the country and meet the teachers who are doing the hard work of making sure every child realizes their full potential," said U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings. "The real excitement in education is happening in classrooms across the country and we are fortunate to have many outstanding educators share their approaches for academic achievement."
This year's co-hosts include two federal government agencies--the National Park Service (NPS) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA); a number of TechNet companies, including Microsoft, EMC, AMD-Spansion, Symantec, and Siemens; as well as Motorola, Target, and General Motors Corp. and MATHCOUNTS. San Diego State University will also host a foreign language workshop.
The workshops are part of the Department's Teacher-to-Teacher Initiative, which supports teachers in a variety of ways, including keeping them informed about the latest strategies and research for closing the achievement gap and helping all students meet high standards.
Each workshop will include numerous breakout sessions featuring effective teachers and practitioners sharing strategies that have been successful in their classrooms, schools and districts.
