GSA Breaks Ground at Border for Land Port of Entry

San Luis , AZ — The U. S. General Services Administration (GSA) Administrator Lurita Doan participated in a groundbreaking ceremony for a new commercial port of entry along the United States/Mexico border, the agency announced today. "I have committed GSA to building what we can, where we can, as fast as we can, to secure our borders and facilitate the flow of legitimate trade and travel,” said GSA Administrator Lurita Doan. “This is a down payment on making good on that promise. The building boom at the border has begun." The new San Luis II land port of entry (LPOE) will handle commercial traffic between the United States and Mexico, and will allow the current LPOE San Luis I to better facilitate the flow of pedestrian and private vehicle traffic between the two borders. San Luis II is the first new LPOE to be built in Arizona in over two decades. Congress authorized and appropriated $42 million for the project. Today’s ceremony included other federal and state agency partners, Secretary of the Treasury Mary Peters; Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano; and Department of Homeland Security’s Assistant Commissioner of Customs and Border Protection Thomas Winkowski. ### Founded in 1949, GSA serves as a centralized procurement and property management agency for the federal government. GSA manages more than one-fourth of the government’s total procurement dollars and influences the management of $500 billion in federal assets, including 8,600 government-owned or leased buildings and 208,000 vehicles. On an average day, over 320,000 vehicles, 130,000 pedestrians and 30,000 trucks pass through these facilities. |
