Safavian Named Senior Advisor/Deputy Chief of Staff at GSA

Mr. Safavian will assume the duties of Chief of Staff in July when the incumbent Chief of Staff Brian Jackson departs the agency to pursue a master's degree in business administration at Harvard Business School in Cambridge, Mass. "David brings proven management experience from both the private sector and government service, and he will be a tremendous asset to our leadership team at GSA," Mr. Perry said. The Administrator also said that, "Brian will be sorely missed. He has been a great asset, not only to me personally, but to everyone at GSA. He has been invaluable in instituting the processes to translate the President's management agenda into a working system at the agency. We all wish Brian the best." As Senior Advisor and Deputy Chief of Staff, Mr. Safavian will work collaboratively with the Administrator, Deputy Administrator and senior staff in the immediate Office of the Administrator to provide leadership and guidance in the conduct of special long- and short-range management studies of major concern to the Administrator. He is also expected to work closely with the Chief of Staff to fulfill a variety of assignments in connection with the management of GSA. Most recently, Mr. Safavian served as the Chief of Staff to U.S. Representative Chris Cannon. Prior to his service on Capitol Hill, Mr. Safavian was responsible for client development and management as a shareholder with Janus-Merritt Strategies, LLC. A graduate of Saint Louis University, Mr. Safavian earned a bachelor of arts in political science before pursuing a law degree at Michigan State University - Detroit College of Law. In 1993, he graduated magna cum laude with a juris doctorate. Mr. Safavian received a master's degree in tax law from Georgetown University Law Center in September 1994. GSA is a centralized federal procurement and property management agency created by Congress to improve government efficiency and help federal agencies better serve the public. It acquires, on behalf of federal agencies, office space, equipment, telecommunications, information technology, supplies and services.
