Earth Day Fitting for GSA's Renewable Power Award
April 22, 2002 Washington, D.C. -- The General Services Administration (GSA) today announced it will purchase 24 million kilowatt-hours of electricity generated from renewable resources. The Department of Energy (DOE) will use half the total at the James E. Forrestal Building, 1000 Independence Ave., NW, and at its facilities in Germantown, Md. The rest will be used at the Ronald Reagan Building, 1300 Pennsylvania Ave., NW. Under an existing, competitively bid GSA contract, Pepco Energy Services of Washington, D.C., will provide the combined landfill gas/wind energy over 17 months, at less than a penny more per kilowatt-hour than conventional power sources, amounting to approximately $230,000 more than the cost of conventional power during that period. "This important work is in accord with President Bush's directives and with the Department of Energy's policies for conserving energy and protecting the environment," said GSA Administrator Stephen A. Perry. "We certainly want to express our appreciation to Pepco for its work in making this possible. It is very fitting that this announcement is being made on Earth Day, when we are reminded of the responsibility we all have to protect and preserve this wonderful planet." DOE Secretary Spencer Abraham said, "Today I am pleased to announce that the Department of Energy will purchase electricity generated from renewable resources to power roughly 17 percent of our electricity needs at DOE Headquarters, including our Germantown facilities. Our new contract calls for an annual purchase of 6 million kilowatt hours, roughly the amount of electricity needed to power 600 homes each year." Ed Mayberry, Pepco president and CEO, said, "We are proud to support our government facilities with electricity generated by renewable sources in an affordable and flexible manner. To date, Pepco Energy Services is providing green power to more than 25 percent of its customers in the mid-Atlantic region." GSA is a centralized federal procurement and property management agency created by Congress to improve government efficiency and help federal agencies better serve the public. It acquires, on behalf of federal agencies, office space, equipment, telecommunications, information technology, supplies, and services. GSA, comprised of 14,000 associates, provides services and solutions for the office operations of over 1 million federal workers located in 8,300 government-owned and leased buildings in 1,600 U.S. communities.
