The Energy Policy Act of 1992 (EPACT) requires the Federal government to procure large numbers of AFVs in the coming years as a means of fostering energy security and a cleaner environment. GSA plays an important role in facilitating government's implementation of EPACT through its governmentwide vehicle policy, acquisition, and management functions. Since 1991, GSA has purchased approximately 20,000 alternative fuel vehicles for Federal agencies. In 1991, the Metropolitan Washington (DC) Council of Governments formed the Alternative Fuels partnership to address the growing concerns surrounding the connections between transportation fuels, the environment, and our energy security. The partnership is a public-private group organized and staffed by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments. Complete contest rules are on the Internet at http://policyworks.gov/org/main/mt/homepage/mtv/afvlogo.htm or available by contacting GSA's Patrick McConnel at (202) 501-2362 or MWAFP's George Nichols at (202) 962-3200.
