WASHINGTON – The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) today announced agency details of the FY 2009 budget requested by President George W. Bush.  

The FY 2009 budget requests $481.6 million in discretionary budget authority, which includes the request of a $300.2 million budget authority for the Federal Buildings Fund, $172.9 million for GSA operating appropriations, and an additional $8.5 million for Presidential Transition.  GSA continues to operate more efficiently, and this budget maintains over $6 million in savings achieved in FY08 for a total savings to the taxpayer over the last 2 years of more than $12 million.

“This year, we have requested funding that is in many ways a down payment on a safer and more prosperous future for America while saving taxpayer money in some areas,” said Administrator Lurita Doan. “Our proposed budget would begin building a new consolidated home for the Department of Homeland Security, which is scattered in more than 60 different locations, as well as modernizing one of the largest land ports of entry in the world -- San Ysidro, California -- to protect our communities and relieve congestion.”

The FY 2009 request is the first budget submitted within the framework and under the direction of the 2007-2012 Strategic Plan of the U.S. General Services Administration, which established a new mission, new strategic goals and a reaffirmation of core agency values. 

“GSA’s FY 2009 budget requests the minimum necessary resources to fulfill our mission, in a manner consistent with our core values, while keeping pace with a rapidly changing external environment”, said Kathleen Turco, GSA Chief Financial Officer.  “Fiscal discipline, mission-focus and the core values of the agency are the backbone of this request.”
