Research Project: MECHANICAL TART CHERRY HARVESTING

Location: Kearneysville, West Virginia

Project Number: 1931-21000-015-12
Project Type: Nonfunded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 01, 2005
End Date: Dec 31, 2006

Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research project is to test ARS's experimental canopy shaker on bush/dwarf tart cherry trees to develop an improved harvesting concept.

Approach:
The experimental canopy shaker developed at the Appalachian Fruit Research Station for detaching small fruits will be loaned to Dr. Jim Flore, Michigan State University for the 2005 and 2006 season. Dr. Flores has an experimental block of bush/dwarf tart cherries that cannot be harvested with conventional methods. Field tests will determine shaker effectiveness, optimum parameters, and determine compatible cultivar characteristics, cultural practices, and training systems.
