Research Project: DEVELOPMENT OF RISK-MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES FOR RE-ESTABLISHING PEACH ORCHARDS FOLLOWING THE FIRST OCCURRENCE OF PLUM POX VIRUS IN THE U.S.

Location: Kearneysville, West Virginia

2007 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
Evaluate new peach plantings and acquire image data to determine if the same or similar ideas that were applied in the apple project could be applied to peach.

1b.Approach (from AD-416)
Acquire digital images of peach plantings and assess feasibility for automation. Advise horticulturists on engineering needs.

3.Progress Report
This report serves to document research conducted under a non-funded cooperative agreement between ARS and Penn State University. Additional details of research can be found in the report for the parent project 1931-21000-015-00D Integrated Orchard Management and Automation for Deciduous Tree Fruit Crops. In collaboration with Dr. Tara Baugher and Dr. James Schupp, the agreement seeks to determine the best way to replant peach orchards in order to maximize fruit quality and early bearing, in addition to minimizing labor inputs. This project has started only very recently. The peach plantings were evaluated in August 2007 to explore the feasibility of applying computer vision research to peach. The data analysis is in progress. The ADODR monitored progress through phone conversations and site visits.
