3.Progress Report
This report serves to document research conducted under a grant agreement between ARS and the North American Strawberry Growers Association. Additional details of research can be found in the report for the parent project 1931-21000-012-00D, "Small Fruit Production Systems." The goal of this project is to develop a method for promoting and advancing fall flowering in short-day varieties for producing fruit in fall and spring. The objective of this research is to improve the understanding of mechanisms that control flowering in strawberries and enhance fall fruiting in short-day type cultivars. Studies characterized the effect of altered light environment and mineral nutrition during transplant production phase on early fall flowering response. Several short-day type strawberry cultivars produced high fruit yield in the fall when started in early July and grown in a soilless system inside a high tunnel. Progress is monitored through e-mails and interactions at the Annual Conference.
