Research Project: INTERMOUNTAIN WEST NATIVE PLANT POLLINATION PROJECT

Location: Pollinating Insects-- Biology, Management and Systematics Research

2006 Annual Report

4d.Progress report.
This report documents research conducted under a reimbursable agreement between ARS and the Rocky Mountain Research Station of the USFS. Additional details of research can be found in the report for the parent CRIS 5428-21000-010-00D Pollinating Insect-Biology, Management, Systematics Research. This year in Nevada, we initiated a study of the breeding biology and pollination of fernleaf bicuitroot. Two trial gardens for this perennial wildflower were established, and the bee fauna was sampled. Transplanted taproots yielded substantial plants that flowered this spring. Germinated seed of this and two other species yielded small plants that have gone into dormancy. Manual outcrossing (by hand) of flowering plants yielded abundant seed, but umbels bagged to prevent bee visitation yielded little or no seed, as did umbels left uncovered, but at a location where floral specialists are absent. Some native plant species may prove difficult for seed growers to pollinate when grown in the absence of their natural pollinators.
