Research Project: MECHANICAL TART CHERRY HARVESTING

Location: Kearneysville, West Virginia

2005 Annual Report

4d.Progress report.
This report serves to document research conducted under a non-funded cooperative agreement between ARS and Michigan State University. Additional details of this research can be found in the report for the parent project 1931-21440-003-00D, Harvest Automation/Mechanization for Tree Fruits and Automated Sorting Systems for Apples. ARS's experimental canopy shaker was mounted on a test frame and tested on experimental plantings of both tart and sweet cherries at MSU's Clarksville experimental orchards. Field tests demonstrated very effective fruit removal at speeds up to 3 kph. Plant characteristics and tree structures were identified for capability with the canopy-shaking concept.
