2005 Annual Report
4d.Progress report.
This report serves to document research that was conducted under a Specific Cooperative Agreement between ARS and The Ohio State University. Additional details of research can be found in the report for the parent CRIS 3607-21000-008-00D Develop New or Improved Methods of Hydroponic and Greenhouse Production and Pest Protection.
Bare-root liners of four species of woody plants were placed into one-gallon containers, filled with a standard bark mix, using overhead irrigation practices and an Osmocote plus fertilizer, 5-6 month formulation applied at the medium rate. The four species used were Cornus alba ‘Argenteo-marginata’, Berberis thungbergii ‘Aurea’, Spirea bumalda ‘Magic Carpet’ and Viburnum trilobum ‘Bailey Compact’. Plants were grown on gravel beds in full sun on 1ft. centers. In May, August and in early October, 240 plants per species were sprayed at the 1X label rate with Oryzalin, Prodiamine, Pendimethalin, or Trifluralin using a GS CO2 sprayer on 16" centers, with 8002VS medium droplet nozzles spraying at 45-50 psi. 60 plants did not receive herbicide applications. The experiment is designed as a completely random design with five single plant replications. Later, plants were placed can tight in single milky poly overwintering houses at The Ohio State University, Columbus campus. After the average date for first frost, plant growth was measured by using a growth index (plant height or width, depending on growth habit) for all 300 plants per species. Container and ambient temperatures were recorded using thermocouples and data loggers. Daily maximum, minimum, and average temperatures were calculated during the overwintering period.
