US Department of Labor’s Hurricane Recovery Assistance

US Department of Labor’s DOL Natural Disaster Assistance Programs
This web page provides information on the U.S. Department of Labor efforts to support communities and individuals affected by Hurricane Katrina.

Unemployment Insurance

This website provides information on the US Department of Labor’s Unemployment Insurance Program. In general, the Federal-State Unemployment Insurance Program provides unemployment benefits to eligible workers who are unemployed through no fault of their own (as determined under State law), and meet other eligibility requirements of State law. This link provides access to State specific information on unemployment benefits, employment assistance, or employer information.

Disaster Unemployment Assistance for Hurricane Survivors
The U.S. Department of Labor oversees DUA and coordinates with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which provides the funds for payment of DUA and state administration. The Department of Labor is working with state and local governments in disaster areas and relief sites to issue unemployment insurance and disaster unemployment assistance. For more information, call 1-866-4-USA-DOL (1-866-487-2365) or visit America's Service Locator.

National Emergency Grants
Upon a FEMA declaration of Public Assistance (infrastructure repair), National Emergency Grant (NEG) funds are made available to states to either create temporary employment for individuals permanently or temporarily dislocated by the disaster in the clean up of public and nonprofit facilities, or to provide humanitarian assistance to disaster victims. Work on private property is restricted to the homes of individuals who qualify for assistance under the Federal home weatherization program - basically, the elderly and economically disadvantaged.

Emergency Preparedness and People with Disabilities
This website provides links to US Department of Labor resources and information on emergency preparedness and people with disabilities. Resources include Preparing the Workplace for Everyone, Employers’ Guide to Including Employees with Disabilities in Emergency Evacuation Plans, and Effective Emergency Preparedness Planning: Addressing the Needs of Employees with Disabilities.

Katrina Recovery Job Connection Site
Department of Labor has sponsored a new job board focused on supporting the transition back into employment for individuals impacted by Katrina. The goal of the website is to connect job seekers with employers in high growth, high demand industries, either for the cleanup process or for permanent employment. The site is designed to connect individuals in both the impacted areas and in states that are hosting evacuees. Employers may post jobs and search resumes on the website and job seekers can search for jobs and post resumes. This site is intended to complement the efforts at the state and local level to connect workers and jobs – both for hurricane clean-up and rebuilding efforts and to help individuals move back into permanent employment.
