U.S. Department of Labor's OSHA teams with San Antonio Masonry Contractors Association to protect employees in that industry

AUSTIN, Texas -- Providing better workplace safety for employees working in the San Antonio metropolitan area is the goal of a partnership agreement between the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the San Antonio Masonry Contractors Association (SAMCA).

SAMCA is a local trade group of more than 50 member companies committed to providing the San Antonio metropolitan area with quality masonry products and services. Partnering companies of SAMCA have committed to developing and sharing best practices as well as to provide specialized training to their employees so that they will recognize commonly encountered workplace hazards.

Eric S. Harbin, director of OSHA's Austin Area Office, and Joann Natarajan, OSHA's compliance assistance specialist in Austin, attended today's partnership signing ceremony, along with representatives of the 12 partnering companies: Brazos Masonry, C & S Contractors Inc., C.L. Crow Masonry Inc., DJM Masonry Enterprises Inc., Groesbeck Masonry Inc., Guad Masonry Contractor, Curtis Hunt Restorations Inc., LS Masonry, Lundberg Masonry Inc., Rudd & Adams Masonry Inc., Shadrock & Williams Masonry Ltd. and Rick Stone Masonry Inc.

OSHA's strategic partnerships are part of Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the safety and health of employees through cooperative relationships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and employees. More than 1.4 million employees and more than 26,000 employers across the United States have participated with OSHA in more than 530 strategic partnerships since the program began in 1998.

Employers and employees with questions about this and other OSHA partnerships may call OSHA's Austin Area Office at 512-374-0271 or visit OSHA's Web site at www.osha.gov (click on “Cooperative Programs”).

OSHA has improved workplace safety and health over the past 37 years. This success is reflected in the latest data (2006) showing the lowest national injury and illness incidence rate that the Bureau of Labor Statistics has ever recorded. OSHA will continue to work diligently to focus its resources where they will have the most impact in assuring that every working man and woman returns home safely every day.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthy workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to promote the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
