Region 3 News Release: 08-183-PHI (osha 08-017) Feb. 13, 2008 Contact: Alisha Brown Phone: 215-861-5101 U.S. Department of Labor's OSHA recognizes Veolia Environmental Services for stellar workplace safety and health TREVOSE, Pa. -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has certified Veolia Environmental Services as a "star" site in its prestigious Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP). During a recent ceremony at the company's Trevose facility, Richard S. Terrill, OSHA's acting regional administrator in Philadelphia, presented the company with the VPP star flag. "Veolia Environmental Services has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to employee safety and health," said Terrill. "The company's exceptional efforts resulted in an injury and illness rate 58 percent below the industry average." Veolia Environmental Services is an environmental services company specializing in the classification, packaging and transportation of solid and hazardous waste. The company has 85 employees and services a variety of industries, including research and development, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, general manufacturing, educational institutions, hospitals, government agencies, oil manufacturing and public utility companies. The star designation is the highest level of recognition that an employer can achieve in the VPP. Designed for worksites with comprehensive, successful safety and health programs, the VPP is open to all industries and to companies with injury rates below their respective industries' national averages. More than 1,920 worksites nationwide have earned entry into OSHA's VPP. The VPP has proven over the years to be an effective means of reducing injuries, illnesses, fatalities and costs, while fostering a more productive workforce and increasing employee morale. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplaces for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
