Valero Refining Co. Achieves OSHA Recognition

ARDMORE, Okla. -- Valero Refining Co. in Ardmore, Okla., has earned membership in the prestigious "Star" Voluntary Protection Program of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). A recognition ceremony was held at the company's Ardmore facility.

"Valero has demonstrated excellence in effective safety and health management," said OSHA Regional Administrator John Miles in Dallas. "Their outstanding efforts include maintaining an injury and illness rate that is 79 percent below the national average for their industry."

The Ardmore facility, which processes medium sour crude oil from both domestic and foreign sources, is capable of receiving crude oil from third party pipelines and trucking operations. Refined products are transported via pipeline, rail cars and truck. The company employs about 305 workers, and there are about 60 contract workers on site.

The Voluntary Protection Programs recognize and promote effective workplace safety and health management. Companies in the VPP achieve average injury rates 50 percent lower than other companies in their industry. From coast to coast, approximately 1,200 worksites representing more than 200 industries participate in the programs.

Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. The role of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health.
