Events to be Held at Miami Dade Community College, Homestead

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Agricultural, landscaping and construction safety classes for Hispanic and Haitian workers are the focus of the South Florida Family Health and Safety Fair, Feria Familiar de Salud y Seguridad. The event will also feature safety classes for the entire family.

The fair runs from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, June 4 at the Miami Dade Community College, Homestead campus. The main events are classes taught in Spanish and Creole by safety professionals. Topics include: fall protection, trench safety, hazard communication and the safe use of forklifts, electrical and other construction equipment.

Family members can attend CPR, water safety awareness and electricity safety demonstrations. Free health screenings will also be available.

"Thanks to the generosity of sponsors, all classes are free," said Luis Santiago, director of the Ft. Lauderdale area office of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

OSHA, the University of South Florida's SafetyFlorida, the College of Public Health, and the University of Florida Extension Service organized the fair to promote safety and health for Hispanic and Haitian workers and their families.

Employers, labor contractors and growers are encouraged to attend and to send their Spanish and Creole-speaking workers to the fair.

Special activities are planned for children, including clowns and a magician during the noon hour and safety awareness presented in an entertaining manner.
