Research Project: ERS COMMODITY FOOD DATABASE

Location: Food Surveys

2007 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
To develop a commodity food database.

1b.Approach (from AD-416)
The ARS FoodLink database system will be used to develop the ERS commodity food database using ERS commodity food definitions.

3.Progress Report
This report documents research conducted under a Reimbursable Agreement between ARS and the Economic Research Service (ERS). Additional details of research can be found in the report for the in-house associated project, 1235-53000-012-00D, "Quantitative and Qualitative Nutrition Assessment of Community Based Nutrition Programs and Interventions."

An interagency agreement between ARS and ERS was initiated in June 2006, to develop a database that allows foods reported in the 1994-2004 national dietary intake surveys to be translated into unique agriculture commodities in order to report on food consumption by those commodities. ERS has defined 12 major groups with extensive food lists in each group. Completion of two of the major groups has been accomplished--dairy and fruit. Vegetables, legumes, meat, fish, poultry, and eggs commodity databases are in progress. Grains, nuts, caloric sweeteners, and fats and oils commodity databases will be completed in 2008. The Food Commodity Economic Database will be useful to policymakers, commodity groups, food growers, economists, and other researchers interested in assessing food intake closer to the farm gate. It will also provide the ability to assess the capacity of the U.S. food supply in meeting the recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines for the American population. Monitoring activities for this project include joint technical meetings approximately every 3 months between key Food Surveys Research Group (FSRG) scientists and ERS economists to review each database as it is developed.
