Research Project: COLLABORATION OF FSRG IN THE HEALTHY AGING IN NEIGHBORHOODS OF DIVERSITY ACROSS THE LIFE SPAN STUDY (HANDLS)

Location: Food Surveys

2007 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
Provide scientific and technical support in collection, coding, and analysis of dietary data for the Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversity Across the Life Span Study (HANDLS).

1b.Approach (from AD-416)
The Food Surveys Research Group will collaborate with the National Institute on Aging on the HANDLS study as described below.

1. FSRG shall provide the following components from its USDA Dietary Intake Data System: a) The USDA Automated Multiple Pass Method instrument for collection of the 24-hour dietary recalls in HANDLS. Blaise licenses required for running the AMPM on laptops shall be the responsibility of the National Institute on Aging. b) Electronic version of the AMPM Training Guide. c) Electronic version of the AMPM Interviewer Reference Manual. d) SurveyNet for computer-assisted coding of dietary intake data. e) The SurveyNet Coder Reference Manual.

2. To support a Visiting Scientist from the University of Delaware and two students working on the HANLDS study, FSRG will provide the following space and equipment: a) Office space for three HANDLS staff at FSRG, Building 005, 10300 Baltimore Avenue, Beltsville, MD. b) Equipment to include the following: 3 desks and chairs 2 tables 2 telephones 3 network computers 1 laptop computer projector email and internet connection for 3 staff copying and printing capability

3. FSRG staff shall collaborate and participate in the HANLDS study by providing the following technical and scientific work: a) Conduct 2 AMPM training sessions, each up to 4 days in length, for dietary interviewers. b) Conduct up to 4 AMPM refresher training sessions, each up to 2 days in length. c) Conduct 1 training session, 3 days in length, at FSRG for dietary data coders. d) Technical support to HANDLS computer staff for transmission of dietary data from AMPM to FSRG. e) Technical consultation from staff responsible for design and operation of systems used for collecting, coding, and processing dietary data from HANDLS. f) Conduct the processing of dietary recalls collected in HANDLS utilizing the USDA Post Interview Processing System for extraction of AMPM Blaise databases, reformatting AMPM data for SurveyNet, and autocoding of food descriptions. g) Conduct analysis of dietary recalls and compilation of a file that contains data on each HANDLS participant dietary recall collected during 2005, including for each food consumed: date, time and name of the eating occasion when the food was eaten, food code, amount eaten (in grams), amounts of energy and 60 nutrients/food components in units appropriate to the nutrient, codes to indicate foods eaten in combination. Daily aggregates of total energy and nutrient intakes, intake of water consumed in a 24-hour period, use of salt, and special diet information for each HANDLS participant will also be provided.

3.Progress Report
This report documents research conducted under a Reimbursable Agreement between ARS and the National Institutes of Health, National Institute on Aging. Additional details of research can be found in the report for the in-house associated project, 1235-53000-015-00D, "Improve and Conduct the Collection, Assessment, and Dissemination of Food Consumption and Related Data of Americans." Scientists within the Food Surveys Research Group provided scientific and technical support in the collection, coding, and analysis of dietary data for the Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversity across the Life Span: A 20-Year Longitudinal Study (HANDLS). The primary objective of HANDLS is to create a representative 20-year longitudinal study of health status across the lifespan focused on investigating the differential influences of race and socioeconomic status on health in an urban population. The study is recruiting a representative sample of whites and African Americans between 30 and 64 years old from 12 census tracts in Baltimore City, Maryland, in both low and high socioeconomic strata. Data collection includes a baseline assessment and five follow-up triennenial assessments over approximately 20 years. Anticipating attrition due to non-response, morbidity, and mortality yields an initial sample of approximately 4,000 participants or about 335 participants per tract.

HANDLS researchers were provided with and trained on operation and administration of the dietary recall instrument, the USDA Automated Multiple Pass Method, for collection of the 24-hour dietary recalls, the Post Interview Processing System for automated food coding, and the computer-assisted coding system, SurveyNet, for manual coding and analysis of dietary intake data. Food Surveys Research Group (FSRG) scientists collaborated in launching the dietary data collection and processing in HANDLS in the fall of 2005. Since that launch, they have conducted and/or participated in a total of 12 training sessions for HANDLS dietary interviewers and dietary data coders, two of which were conducted in 2007. They reviewed data for quality assurance as data collection and coding were initiated. They collaborated with the HANDLS nutritionist in establishing quality control procedures for data review and editing. Throughout data collection, FSRG scientists have provided technical expertise and guidance in the dietary data processing operations of HANDLS, including identification of needed system capabilities to assure data integrity and programming systems to assure effective data transfer and editing.

Monitoring activities for this project include bimonthly data review and transfer from the HANDLS Study to the University of Delaware by FSRG scientists, periodic conference calls and/or meetings to address technical computer program issues and training preparations, and twice yearly training of dietary interviewers and coders.
