2007 Annual Report
1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
The overall objective of this agreement is to collaborate in sample analysis, and design and performance of investigations to examine the relationship between dietary intake, metabolism, and physiologic functions as they relate to the risk of disease and promoting good health.
1b.Approach (from AD-416)
Through the use of a variety of different types of feeding and nutrition studies (e.g., controlled diets, ad libitum diets, physical activity interventions), samples will be collected for analysis of a wide variety of risk factors associated with disease, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity. In addition, samples will also be analyzed from studies designed and conducted to investigate the metabolism or physiologic action of specific nutrients or phytochemicals. Data from these studies will provide a scientific basis for dietary recommendations.
3.Progress Report
This report documents research conducted under a specific cooperative agreement between the ARS and Medstar Research Institute. Additional details of research can be found in the reports for the following in-house associated projects: 1235-51000-046-00D, "Bioavailability and Metabolism of Phytochemicals and Micronutrients;" 1235-51000-007-00D, "Influence of Physical Activity on Long-term Voluntary Food Intake and Maintenance of a Healthy Weight;" and 1235-51530-008-00D, "Dietary Modulation of Markers of Inflammation and Oxidation as Risk factors of Chronic, Degenerative Diseases." This agreement serves to combine the expertise of ARS in conducting nutrition studies with those of Medstar Research Institute in protecting human subjects and the medical aspects of nutrition research. Several grant applications have been developed and submitted as a result of this collaboration between ARS and Medstar. In addition, ARS and Medstar scientists have developed several new research projects. Intervention studies are critical to all of the research projects conducted in the laboratory, and this agreement provides the support to conduct these studies in a timely manner. This agreement provides the laboratory with medical and clinical expertise. Moreover, as the population becomes more overweight and less healthy, through this cooperation, the laboratory will have access to a more diverse population for recruitment of volunteers for new studies. Activities and progress of this agreement were monitored through quarterly meetings at Medstar facilities, and through monthly telephone calls.
