NOAA Administrator Releases Report on the Health of our Nation’s Estuaries
Washington (July 31)—National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Administrator and Under Secretary Vice Admiral (Ret.) Conrad Lautenbacher announced the results of a comprehensive assessment of estuarine eutrophication, or nutrient pollution, of America’s coastal estuaries during a joint press conference with the Environmental Protection Agency at the National Press Club. Gutierrez Honors Medal of Technology Laureates at Commerce Department
Washington (July 27)—Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez addressed the 2005-2006 National Medal of Technology Laureates at a reception honoring their “Spirit of Discovery, Invention, and Innovation” at the Commerce Department. The 14 Laureates received their awards from President George W. Bush at an earlier White House ceremony. The recipients were joined by other senior Commerce Department officials and business leaders. NOAA’s Teacher at Sea Program Unveils Its Latest Children’s Book
Washington (July 26)—NOAA’s Teacher at Sea program has unveiled its third in a series of four planned children’s books. The book is about the experiences of teacher Linda Armwood aboard NOAA ship Fairweather, a hydrographic survey ship operating in Alaskan waters. Fairweather collects data on water depth, obstructions, and navigational hazards for the nation’s nautical charts as part of NOAA’s mission to promote safe maritime navigation. (More)

Washington (July 26)—Secretary of Commerce Carlos M. Gutierrez spoke to the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) National Internship Program's 15th Anniversary Gala. The Secretary highlighted the growing contribution of Hispanic-Americans to our nation's economy and culture, and encouraged the interns to use their experience to lead our country in the future. The Commerce Department has hosted more than 600 HACU interns over the program's history.
