Cabinet Members Address Media After Talks with Chinese

Washington (May 23)—Following the Strategic Economic Dialogue (SED) with their Chinese counterparts, members of the Cabinet, including Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez (right), addressed the media to discuss outcomes of the two-day talks. Gutierrez highlighted the need for tough enforcement of intellectual property rights and improved market access for U.S. companies as two key messages relayed to the Chinese during the dialogue. Sampson Reviews Preparations for 2010 Census in California

Stockton, Calif. (May 22)—Deputy Secretary of Commerce David A. Sampson met with local Census Bureau staff members to review the preparations currently underway for the 2010 Census. For the first time, hand-held computers with Global Positioning System (GPS) technology will be used to collect information electronically for a decennial census. Field Operations Supervisor Brandon Bischoff demonstrated the technology for Sampson. (More)

Gutierrez Participates in High-Level Economic Talks with Chinese

Washington (May 22)—Secretary of Commerce Carlos M. Gutierrez participated in the Strategic Economic Dialogue (SED), a unique forum led by Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson which was designed to foster ongoing discussions on the long-term, strategic economic relationship between the U.S. and China. The Secretary, along with his Administration colleagues, encouraged China to speed up the pace of important reforms, including governmental transparency and intellectual property rights protection.

NOAA Predicts Above-Normal 2007 Atlantic Hurricane Season

Washington (May 22)—Retired Navy Vice Adm. Conrad C. Lautenbacher, Ph.D., Undersecretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and NOAA Administrator, announced there is a 75 percent chance the Atlantic Hurricane Season will be above-normal this year—showing the ongoing active hurricane era remains strong. With the start of the hurricane season upon us, NOAA recommends those in hurricane-prone regions to begin their preparation plans. (More)

Secretary Gutierrez Meets with Thai Health Minister

Washington (May 21)—Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez hosted Mongkol Na Songkhla, Minister of Public Health of Thailand at the Commerce Department to discuss commercial issues between our two nations. Thailand is home to nearly 65 million people and two-way trade with the country in 2006 was $30.7 billion.

Secretary Gutierrez Announces Competitiveness Report to be Released at Hemispheric Forum Next Month in Atlanta

Washington (May 21)—U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez announced today that he will release a report, Competitiveness in the Americas, at the Americas Competitiveness Forum, a gathering of top government officials, corporate leaders and academics, in Atlanta, Ga. June 11-13, 2007. “The Competitiveness in the Americas report will help us examine what may be impeding or promoting competitiveness in the Western Hemisphere,” said Gutierrez. (Release) (More)

Sampson Applauds Records Set in U.S. Tourism Industry

Washington (May 16)—U. S. Commerce Deputy Secretary David A. Sampson held a press conference to celebrate National Tourism Week and announced that U.S. tourism-related sales set a record in 2006. Sampson used one of Washington DC’s many scenic views as the backdrop to highlight the importance of the travel and tourism industry to the U.S. economy and the jobs they support. (More)

Gutierrez Says Immigration Reform Essential for Economic Growth

Washington (May 15)—At the National Press Club, Secretary of Commerce Carlos M. Gutierrez delivered keynote remarks to the National Retail Federation and later spoke to reporters on the status of comprehensive immigration reform negotiations. The Secretary said the effective assimilation of immigrants has been America's competitive advantage in the global economy and that reform was essential to secure our borders while continuing to welcome immigrants.
