Research Project: CLASSICAL BIOLOGICAL CONTROL OF WHITE PEACH SCALE ON PAPAYA IN HAWAII

Location: Post-Harvest Tropical Commodities Research

Project Number: 5320-43000-014-08
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: Oct 01, 2005
End Date: Dec 28, 2006

Objective:
To control white peach scale in papaya in Hawaii using classical biological control.

Approach:
Two parasitic wasps, Encarsia berlesei and E. diaspidicola, will be imported into Hawaii for biological control of the papaya pest Pseudaulacaspis pentagon (white peach scale). Work will be conducted in quarantine to determine if the wasps are host specific and whether they carry hyperparasites. Upon approval for field release, studies will be conducted to evaluate establishment of the wasps and any reduction in scale populations. Documents Trust with Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation. Log 28907.
