Research Project: STUDY OF RESISTANCE MANAGEMENT AND INJURY POTENTIAL OF LEPIDOPTEROUS PESTS TO TRANSGENIC COTTONS

Location: Southern Insect Management Research Unit

2007 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
The objective of this cooperative research project is the study of resistance management and injury potential of Lepidopterous pests to transgenic cottons.

1b.Approach (from AD-416)
Collections of feral heliothines are key to assess their susceptibility to Bacillus thuringiensis proteins. Due to the fact that the Mexican Agricultural Landscape is varied among the cotton-producing belt in North America, samples from those regions offer a great opportunity to conduct behavioral and ecological research with these pests. This work can lead to a better detection of Bt resistance in feral Lepidoptera as well as the enhancement of the knowledge of heliothine's reproductive biology.

3.Progress Report
This report serves to document research conducted under a Specific Cooperative Agreement between INIFAP and ARS. Additional details of research can be found in the report for the in-house project 6402-22000-047-00D, "Resistance Management and Injury Potential of Lepidopterous Pests to Transgenic Cottons.” Bollworm and tobacco budworm field populations were collected on a variety of host plants. Progeny were exposed to Cry1Ac, Cry2Ab, and Cry1F toxins in diet incorporated bioassays. No resistance was detected. This agreement was monitored by holding a meeting at the Cotton Beltwide Conference.
