Research Project: SPRAYABLE FOAM FOR TRAPPING AND KILLING CODLING MOTH LARVAE

2007 Annual Report


1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
To develop efficient and economic alterative to banding for trapping and killing codling moth larvae on apple tree trunks.


1b.Approach (from AD-416)
A biodegradable foam will be developed to apply to tree trunks, including formulation of a pesticide and a larval pheromone to lure larvae into the foam where they will die. The foam will be applied mechanically and will decompose between seasons. Documents Trust with WTFRC. Log 31211.


3.Progress Report
This report serves to document research conducted under a Trust agreement between ARS and Washington Tree Fruit Research Commission. Additional details of research can be found in the report for the parent project 5352-22000-017-00D 'Management of Insect Pests of Temperate Tree Fruit Crops'. A series of formulations were designed and prepared in the Albany ARS lab and tested with a laboratory assay for acceptability to mature codling moth larvae. Larvae entered into material acceptable as a pupation site. A formulation was selected for a preliminary field evaluation. This material was hand applied to the lower trunks of apple trees, in direct comparison to cardboard banding as a means of intercepting larvae seeking pupation sites. Problems occurred with material removed from trunks by irrigation water applied below canopy. Additional development of formulations in the laboratory is underway to permit application with a sprayer, and to improve water repellency. ADODR Statement: Communication among on site employees involved in this project was facilitated by weekly meetings to plan work and discuss results. E-mail and telephone calls were the principal means of keeping in touch with off site collaborators, as well as an informal meeting in conjunction with the WTFRC Apple Entomology Research Review.
