Research Project: AREAWIDE PEST MANAGEMENT PROGRAM FOR RUSSIAN WHEAT APHID AND GREENBUG: COLORADO

Location: Wheat, Peanut and Other Field Crops Research

2007 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
The objective of this cooperative research project is to collect and evaluate information on the area-wide pest management of the Russian wheat aphid and greenbug, and to disseminate the information through development and administration of effective outreach and education programs.

1b.Approach (from AD-416)
Areawide pest management approaches for the Russian wheat aphid and greenbug were explored and evaluated during a multi-year project involving close collaboration between grower cooperators, researchers, and educators. We will finalize data acquisition for that project, but most importantly we will evaluate and summarize information acquired during the previous 4-years and undertake an intensive outreach effort based on that information. The effectiveness of an integrated farming system approach, based on efficient crop rotations, resistant wheat varieties, and information based pest management strategies will be the focus of the outreach program.

3.Progress Report
This report serves to document research conducted under a specific cooperative agreement between USDA-ARS and Colorado State University. Additional details of research can be found in the report for the parent CRIS 0500-00044-012-00D, Areawide Pest Management for Russian Wheat Aphid and Greenbug. The purpose of this SCA is to finalize data acquisition for work done previously under the expired SCA 0500-00044-012-01S, but most importantly to evaluate and summarize information acquired during the previous 4 years and undertake an intensive outreach effort based on that information. During FY 2007, all data from Colorado demonstration sites was assembled, checked for accuracy, and transmitted to a server located at Stillwater, OK, for processing. Data were processed along with demonstration site data from cooperators in other states, and summaries of important project findings were produced. Results showed that growers using predominantly diversified crop rotations, as opposed to wheat fallow production, had reduced aphid infestations and also reduced infestations of broadleaf weeds and winter annual grasses. Production of a production guide based on project outcomes and previously available information was initiated during FY 2007. Colorado State University personnel contributed to the effort to produce an educational DVD, which will encapsulate important project information and will be distributed to as many stakeholders as possible. The ADODR monitored activities via periodic meetings and conference calls, e-mails, and written progress reports from the collaborator.
