Research Project: CITRUS LEAFMINER SEX PHEROMONE DEVELOPMENT AND APPLICATION

2007 Annual Report


1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
To confirm putative pheromone components for the citrus leafminer, Phyllonistis citrella, and determine optimal deployment strategies.


1b.Approach (from AD-416)
Pheromone lures provided by collaborators at Univ. of California, Davis will be deployed in commercial traps at the USDA, ARS farm at Fort Pierce, FL. Relative performance of different lure components, lure height, lure density, and other factors will be examined through replicated trials in citrus groves known to be infested with the leafminer.


3.Progress Report
This report serves to document research conducted under a nonfunded cooperative agreement between ARS and the University of California at Davis. Additional details of the research can be found in the report for the parent CRIS 6618-22000-030-00D, IPM Technologies for Subtropical Insect Pests. Two candidate pheromone blends were confirmed for their ability to attract adult moths of the leafminer Phyllocnistis citrella in a Florida citrus grove. Traps baited with pheromone lures deployed in a Florida citrus grove described seasonal flight phenology during 2006. A correction factor was devised to compensate for lure degradation based on a regression model of relative lure efficiency, expressed as a percent of the catch of a freshly deployed lure, and number of days each set of lures was deployed. The regression of percent trap catch vs. number of days deployed yielded a quadratic expression that predicts 50% loss of lure attractiveness at 50d after lure deployment and 90% loss at 137d. The data transformed for lure degradation revealed four apparent population density peaks including two minor peaks with highest mean trap catch in early April and late October, and two major peaks with highest mean trap catch on 31 May and 1 August. A peer-reviewed manuscript was submitted to journal and accepted during the FY.
