Research Project: CEREAL APHID LIFE SYSTEM MODELING

Location: Wheat, Peanut and Other Field Crops Research

2006 Annual Report

4d.Progress report.
This report serves to document research conducted under a specific cooperative agreement between ARS and Oklahoma State University, Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology. Additional details of research can be found in the report for the parent CRIS (6217-22000-013-00D Biologically Based Cereal Aphid Management). During FY2006 a study to determine the spatio-temporal population dynamics of the greenbug was conducted in a 2-ha winter wheat field located near Perkins, Oklahoma. Weekly samples were taken of greenbugs, other aphids, and their natural enemies throughout the growing season. The samples were taken on a spatial grid that covered the field at uniform distances from a center point, which was initially infested with greenbugs from a greenhouse colony. The spatial and temporal dynamics of populations of the various arthropods were visualized and analyzed using geostatistics. The data are being used to develop an improved simulation model for the greenbug and its natural enemies.
