Research Project: AREAWIDE MANAGEMENT OF THE TARNISHED PLANT BUG (TPB) IN COTTON IN ARKANSAS

Location: Southern Insect Management Research Unit

2005 Annual Report

4d.Progress report.
This report serves to document research conducted under a Specific Cooperative Agreement between the University of Arkansas and ARS. Additional details can be found in the report for the parent research project 0500-00044-013-00D, Area-Wide Pest Management of the Tarnished Plant Bug in Cotton in Absence of the Boll Weevil. The experiment was conducted in Southeastern AR, in Desha County, and in Northeastern AR, in Crittenden County. The herbicide application was made in the treated areas in March at both locations and resulted in greater than 95% control of the alternate hosts at the two locations. Plant bugs were sampled in cotton grown in treated and untreated areas during June and July at both locations. Plant bug populations in the southeast location increased in cotton during July in the untreated sample area but did not increase in the cotton in the treated area. In the northeast location plant bug populations were low in cotton grown in the treated and untreated areas and no differences in their numbers were found.
