Research Project:
BIOLOGICAL CONTROL OF LYGODIUM
Location: IPRL, Fort Lauderdale, Florida
2006 Annual Report
4d.Progress report.
This report serves to document research conducted under a reimbursable agreement between ARS and the National Park Service. Additional details of research can be found in the report in the parent project 6629-22000-009-00D Development & evaluation of biological control agents for invasive species threatening the everglades & other natural and managed systems. Research on a lygodium stem borer in Singapore found that the insect is a new species. It was found to use Lygodium circinatum, L. flexuosum as well as L. microphyllum in the field. The moth was found at most sites where L. microphyllum grows but occurs at very low densities. A hymenopteran parasite was found to attack the larvae and probably is partly responsible for the moth's low population levels. Rearing efforts prooved difficult.
